Universes Beyond crossovers continue to generate buzz, but the latest announcement from Wizards of the Coast marks a particularly intriguing turning point. Marvel appears keen to secure a larger presence in Magic: The Gathering, as the franchise returns once again with the Darkhold Destiny expansion. Scheduled for release on April 2, the set goes beyond simply placing superheroes on cards; it dives headfirst into the dark, supernatural side of the Marvel universe.
For high-fantasy fans like myself, this announcement is certainly enough to pique one's curiosity.

An Original Story
Unlike recent Universes Beyond releases—such as Star Trek, which drew from film—Darkhold Destiny is based on comic book source material. It features a completely original story developed in collaboration between the narrative teams at WOTC and Marvel. Furthermore, the narrative will be adapted into a physical comic book series coinciding with the set's launch.
The story centers on an alliance between Dormammu and Hela. Using a page from the Darkhold, they tear open the boundary between realities, unleashing a wave of dark creatures into the Multiverse.

A Theme in Sync with Magic
While some crossovers have occasionally felt at odds with Magic’s visual DNA, early previews of Darkhold Destiny suggest this set avoids that pitfall. It features gods, sorcerers, and items that blend seamlessly with the game’s aesthetic.
Iconic figures such as Doctor Strange, Magik, Blade, and Thor will appear, among others. With the Darkhold at the heart of the narrative, the set will include cards that interact directly with the "Artifact" card type or a "grimoire" theme.
A new mechanic is also being introduced: "Vengeance." It builds upon the existing "Adventure" mechanic but allows the card to be cast specifically from the graveyard.

A range of boxed sets for everyone
Wizards has pulled out all the stops for this release
4 themed Commander decks
Lords of Hel, Midnight Sons, Strange Academy, and Gods of Asgard (also available in Collector Surge Foil editions).

What does this mean for the store?
What makes Darkhold Destiny particularly appealing to our community is how well the theme aligns with the charm of Magic’s major fantasy sets. Whether you are a lore purist or a fan of shared universes, the promise of Commander decks focused on dark magic, sorcerers, and creatures of the night offers a fantastic playground for experimentation.
