The Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames set has been out for almost two weeks, and we can confirm that the Standard format meta has shifted! This isn't just due to the addition of new cards, but rather the return of an iconic mechanic that forces players to completely rethink their strategies.
At Cartes Léo, we took the time to analyze the first tournament data to explain what makes this new set so special and how you can adjust your decks to remain competitive.

Mega Evolution: The Return of "Boss" Cards
Mega Evolution reintroduces a layer of risk. But why is it so powerful?
Colossal Stats:
Mega-Evolved Pokémon often arrive with enormous HP—frequently over 300 HP—making them extremely difficult to knock out in one hit. This makes progressive-build decks less viable, as they can quickly evolve from Basic EX to Mega EX.
High-Power Attacks:
Their attacks are designed to deal massive damage, often enough to Knock Out Pokémon-EX in one hit.

Rules to Know
Prize Cards:
Your opponent takes three Prize cards when a Mega-Evolved Pokémon-EX is Knocked Out. This is a major drawback, as taking more than two cards can often end the game.
Turn Flow:
Evolving into a Mega-Evolved Pokémon-EX does not end your turn.
Difference between cards:
The cards in the new "Mega Evolution" expansion are different from the older "Mega Evolution-EX Pokémon" cards from the XY series. They have different naming conventions and do not interact with older cards that refer to "Mega Evolution Pokémon."

How to adapt your deck
The meta is divided into two camps: those who play Mega Evolutions and those who try to counter them.
If you are playing a Mega Evolution deck
Manage the energy cost: Use type-specific Energy Boost cards, or universal cards like Colorless Double Energy (if applicable) to attack on Turn 2 or Turn 3 at the latest.
Add Energy Recovery: Against decks that try to force you to discard your energy or paralyze you, cards like Energy Recovery or Hyper Ball to search for your basic Pokémon are vital in the late game.
The Anti-Mirror Tech Card: Include at least one card that helps you in the mirror matchup (against another Mega Evolution).

If you're playing against a Mega Evolution deck
Your goal is to exploit your opponent's weakness: their setup time and high attack cost.
Control and Placed Damage: Include effect cards that prevent your opponent from playing. Prioritize cards that will slow their progress, such as those that paralyze, put to sleep, or discard energy or their cards. You can also dominate by attacking the Bench to knock out its Pokémon before they can attack.
Anti-Tool: Since Mega Evolutions rely on Tools, include a Supporter or Stadium card that suits your deck and allows you to get rid of them.
